What is the Answer...Seek Security OR Opportunity?

But the more you seek opportunity, the more likely it is that you will achieve the security that you desire." --Brian Tracy, Author I grew up in Lapeer Michigan, which is twenty minutes from Flint. You might remember Flint from the movie, “Roger and Me”. “Roger and Me” was a not so flattering movie about the auto industry and the area when people were being laid off in the 80’s. My entire family has worked, or is working for GM. Things are not the way they used to be. The sooner we realize we can not depend on the government, or corporations to provide for us, the sooner we will be on the path to true security.
Looking back, my grandfather was able to help many people in his life. My grandparents always seemed to have plenty of money, and they anonymously help several families including mine when times were lean. For his time, grandpa was always on the right path. There are many lessons learned from my grandfather. I miss him.
I’m sad to say that if I followed in his footsteps these days, I would probably starve. He enlisted in the Navy during WWII at age 18. He retired from the Navy as a Chief. He retired at the highest rank and enlisted person could achieve. He served on nuclear submarines as an electrician. Have you ever seen how claustrophobic it is on a sub? Grandpa and I used to laugh because I could never do what he did because I am extremely claustrophobic. He was extremely afraid of flying and I’m a helicopter pilot. How funny!
After retiring from the Navy, he went onto work for General Motors in Flint, MI. After several years of working seven days per week and a couple of heart-attacks later he retired from GM as well. This allowed my grandma and gramps to contribute greatly to their family and friends, as well as enjoy a good 15 years after retirement. I learned a lot from grandpa, including how to treat a woman, how to laugh, and how to care for others. Grandpa would have laughed at Brian Tracy’s quote, but I think Mr. Tracy is really onto something these days. "The more you seek security, the less of it you have. But the more you seek opportunity, the more likely it is that you will achieve the security that you desire." --Brian Tracy, Author For those that grew up in the Depression or were children of parents who grew up in the Depression, the emphasis on security seems to be ingrained. That is completely understandable. I apologize in advance for being blunt, but here goes. In today’s day and age, you will never have security depending on the government or a job to provide for you. If you don’t think so, think about this for a moment. How many people do you know that that could survive one year if they were in an accident preventing them from working? Do you know anybody that could survive without relying others for six months? Be honest! Most people could not last longer than six WEEKS. Sad, but true. Maybe cliché, but by definition JOB means “Journey of the Broke”, or “Just OVER Broke.”
I was fortunate enough to learn early how to be an entrepreneur and seek opportunity verses security. My dad originally followed the path to “security”. Everybody he knew growing up, and most family members worked for GM, or with the auto industry in one capacity or another. My grandparents who I love dearly, practically disowned my dad when he decided to quit GM and go out and make it on his own. The entire family thought he was CRAZY! If you are an entrepreneur you might have already witnessed this phenomenon on you own. The truth is from a democratic perspective, entrepreneurs ARE crazy. Think about it. 5% of the people (I would argue are the business owners and entrepreneurs) have more money than the rest of the 95% of the population.
If you want security you must think like a contrarian, take risks, and fail often. Simple formula, right? My dad left GM, and went to work for another company and learned some skills. He noticed that contractors doing the same work he was doing, were making four to five times more than he was. His entrepreneurial naggings finally got the best of him. He started his own business and became his own boss. If you have ever read Robert Kiyosaki, you understand my dad bought himself a job. He has enjoyed being self employed. He understands the limitations to being self employed and has since leveraged himself into a business owner and investor. The benefits of being self employed are obvious, but the downside is, if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. You never really have real ownership of YOUR time.
My dad has brain washed me to be a contrarian…to think differently than 95 percent of the population. I don’t say that as an insult. I say that knowing how successful my grandfather was as a 95 percent thinker. I would argue his example, was great for the times, but times have changed and it’s time to make your own security. When I was little and couldn’t sleep, my dad would put on a Dennis Waitley tape to help me fall asleep. Dennis Waitley is a former Blue Angel and Motivational Guru. He has helped many professional athletes, as well as POW’s with their thought patterns. I highly recommend his teachings. As you can see I was introduced to positive contrarians early on.
If you asked my dad, he would tell you that it has paid off in the long run. He put me on the right path and I have paid him back by teaching him how to overcome his self employed “Lone Ranger” business plan. He now has multiple systems to help him move from a self employed, time consuming existence to a very successful business owner. He no longer owns his job. He is the sole owner of his time. He still works hard, because he is a “work-aholic”, but now he can walk away and enjoy the grandkids and his systems keep bringing in a very handsome income.
What are some opportunities you could seek while working full time on your job. Jim Rohn says “I was working full time on my job, while working part time on my fortune!” 95% of the people out there will never even think of opportunities. I was always a “twenty percenter”, who always wanted to be a “five percenter”. A “twenty percenter” is someone who knows that they must doing something different, but hasn’t quite made it yet. How did I do it?
I followed Jim Rohn’s advice.
“I worked harder on myself than I did on my business”
