How to Break the Habit
So my first Random Idea comes from: Dr. Robert Anthony's Total Self Confidence "William James Observed that forming a new habit is like winding a ball of string. The longer we can wind the string without dropping the ball, the better off we are. If we drop it and it rolls, we have that much more to wind again. As a new habit becomes stronger, we are less tempted by the old one. Even so we must remember that old habits are never destroyed for good. They are only submerged. For this reason, we must always be aware of our thoughts and actions and keep dominant thoughts operating constructively upon new habits." I can completely relate to the above paragraph. I used to have a nasty habit. I grew up with corn fields in my back yard. I had been chewing since I was 14. If anybody has ever tried giving up nicotine, you know how hard it is to give up. I know some people who can smoke or chew while out golfing, or camping, and never think of it again. I am not one of those people. I quit chewing one time for 6 months. I found myself wanting a chew while golfing. I tricked myself into thinking that I could do it just occasionally. By the time I was done with a round of golf, I would be chewing for years to come from that one weak moment. I have been nicotine free for 2 years now, but I still think of it every now and then. I know that I can't forget that "... old habits are never destroyed for good. They are only submerged." They say that quitting nicotine is harder than quitting heroin. I don't know who "they" are, but anyway. I have never done heroin, so I can't exactly verify that statement, but quitting nicotine was extremely hard. I think the key to replacing any bad habit is twofold. One you must think of positive things to replace the old habit, and two think of something horrible to replace the pleasurable memories or thoughts regarding the old habit. I would exercise or think of healthy habits when I was tempted. I also thought of something really nasty and gross and relate that directly to my bad habit. I would think of drinking a coke that had a cigarette butt in it or something worse whenever I was tempted to chew. That was extremely effective. i also kept a log of my success everyday. The log started out daily, and then weekly, and then monthly, and eventually I quit thinking about it. I remember the day I quit. Feb, 12th 2006. I'm not sure why I chose to speak on this topic today. Maybe it is because I have been thinking of eliminating some of my other habits. Tomorrow’s topic is sure to be more positive. Hopefully this helped somebody out there with something they are struggling with. Have you had some success battling some bad habits? let me know! Nick Logan www.nicklogan.tv www.abundanceweekly.com
